Thoreau writes in his journal:

  P.M.—to Walden, Goose, and Flint’s Ponds, and chestnut wood by Turnpike . . . Gathered a few chestnuts . . . Found the yellow bud of a Nuphar advena in the ditch on the Turnpike on E. [Edmund] Hosmer’s land.
