the Thoreau Log.
7 February 1854. Concord, Mass.

Thoreau writes in his journal:

  P.M.—Down river with C. [William Ellery Channing] . . .

Made a fire on the snow-covered ice half a mile below Ball’s Hill . . . These afternoons the shadows of the woods have already a twilight length by 3 or 4 P.M. . . .

(Journal, 6:104-106)
