the Thoreau Log.
4 October 1853. Concord, Mass.

Thoreau writes in his journal:

The maples are reddening, and birches yellowing. The mouse-ear in the shade in the middle of the day, so hoary, looks as if the frost still lay on it. Well it wears the frost . . . (Journal, 5:435-436).
