  To Cambridge and Boston. Saw, at a menagerie, a Canada lynx, said to have been taken at the White Mountains . . . (Journal, 10:283).

Thoreau also checks out The backwoods of Canada; being letters from the wife of an emigrant officer, illustrative of the domestic economy of British America by Catherine Parr Traill, Histoire du Canada et voyages que les freres mineurs recollects y ont faicts pour la conversion des infidelles by Gabriel Sagard, and an uncertain volume of Memoirs of the American academy of arts and sciences from Harvard College Library (Emerson the Essayist, 2:197).
