the Thoreau Log.
11 February 1858. Concord, Mass.

Thoreau writes in his journal:

At 3 P.M. it is 11° and windy.

I think it is the coldest day of this winter. The river channel is now suddenly and generally frozen over for the first time . . . (Journal, 10:280-281).
